Variola Variations is a project series assembled from the archive of the parafictional character Cody Bissonette of World Truth Advocate Ltd. — a graphic designer, played by various actors and scripted and directed by me — who from 2019 to 2022 participated in exhibitions, talks, and conferences across public and online venues. Bissonette’s work centered on the variola virus as the key to an sprawling global conspiracy linking pharmaceutical corporations, telecom providers, international health agencies, military research labs, and speculative investment firms. The project series comprises Variola Variations (Arrangements), a group of triptychs combining system diagrams, historical photographs, and fragments of speculative research, and Variola Variations (Corporate Suite), a set of mobile kiosks that toured publicly, stocked with altered documents, artifacts, and medical debris tied to Bissonette’s investigation and parked at precise GPS coordinates (the shelf at 41.876650, -87.619167; the column at 41.878494, -87.618828; and the table at 41.884307, -87.630059).
